Marines take top honors in shooting at 2014 Warrior Games presented by Deloitte

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The U.S. Marine Corps wrapped up competition with big wins in shooting and wheelchair basketball on the final day of action at the 2014 Warrior Games presented by Deloitte.

In the big game of the night, the Marines took down the Army 43-30 to win the wheelchair basketball tournament and take home the gold medal. The Army won silver, while the Navy took bronze in yesterday’s game.

Army won the last three titles in wheelchair basketball while the Marines won in 2010.

The Marines won more than twice as many medals as any other branch during the morning’s shooting competition held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center shooting range. The Marines won 10 medals (three gold, four silver, three bronze).

Teammates GySgt. Pedro Aquino (Hawthorne, California) and retired Cpl. Richard Stalder (Muenster, Texas) won four of the Marines medals. Aquino and Stalder went 1-2 in the in the SH2 class, as they traded spots with Aquino taking top honors in the standing rifle, while Stalder won the prone rifle.

Also winning gold was Staff Sgt. Sean Pena (Ft. Sam Houston, Texas) of the Air Force who took the top spot in the SH1 pistol.

“The competition today was great. It was fun to show the other branches that the Air Force can hold its own when it comes to shooting. This has been a great week, and I look forward to competing again next year." 

In the final medal count, the Army extended their lead with five additional medals in shooting. After six days of competition, the Army won 71 medals (23 gold, 27 silver, 21 bronze).

Two-hundred wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans competed over six days of competition in the fifth annual Warrior Games.

The 2014 Warrior Games is hosted by the USOC with support from Deloitte, the presenting sponsor, and other supporting partners including the Department of Defense, AT&T, BP, Dow, Semper Fi Fund, The Fisher House Foundation, The Daniels Fund and USO.

The Chairman’s Cup and the Ultimate Champion awards will be presented tomorrow during halftime of the Air Force v. Navy football game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
