NOVE MESTO, Czech Republic (March 6, 2020) – In a mirror image of Joanne Reid's (Grand Junction, Colo.) performance in Thursday's women's sprint, Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.) went 10-for-10 on the range Friday to place 29th in the men's 10-kilometer sprint at the BMW IBU World Cup in Nove Mesto. Reid placed 29th with clean shooting a day earlier in her 7.5km race.

"I am very proud of the clean shooting," said Doherty. "I was very focused and I executed well on the range."

The World Cup in Nove Mesto is being held in front of empty stands after the Czech National Security Council closed the venue to all spectators due to the recent spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Despite the normally boisterous atmosphere at Nove Mesto being eerily silent, athletes like Doherty treated it like the important world cup event it is.

"It was strange to have the venue so empty, especially since the crowds here are some of the best we get," Doherty added. "But it's still a world cup and it's still plenty exciting to race."

Doherty's time was 2 minutes, 25.8 seconds off the winning pace set by Johannes Thingnes Boe of Norway. Boe's winning time was 22.8 seconds faster than France's Quentin Fillon Maillet and 1:01.1 quicker than his brother, Tarjei Boe. All three medalists shot clean.

Other Americans in Friday's sprint were Jake Brown (Saint Paul, Minn) in 70th place, Leif Nordgren (Hinesburg, Vt.) in 81st, and Paul Schommer (Appleton, Wis.) in 86th.

The BMW IBU World Cup continues its four-day run in Nove Mesto on Saturday with the men's and women's relay. The U.S. women's team of Reid, Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) and Emily Dreissigacker (Morrisville, Vt.) will compete in their 4x6km event, followed by the men's 4x7.5km relay featuring Doherty, Brown, Nordgren and Schommer. Both relays will be shown live on the Olympic Channel beginning at 8:30 a.m. EST with the women's race. The men's relay will air live at 11:00 a.m. EST.
