NOVE MESTO, Czech Republic (March 5, 2020) – It was eerily quiet Thursday evening at the BMW IBU World Cup in Nove Mesto as the women's 7.5-kilometer sprint was held in front of empty stands. What felt like more of a training atmosphere for the 98-woman field was the result of the Czech National Security Council closing the venue to all spectators due to the recent spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

One athlete who seemed to benefit from the lack of fan noise was American Joanne Reid (Grand Junction, Colo.) who went 10-for-10 on the range to match the second-best sprint finish of her career in 29th place, 1 minute, 50.5 seconds off the winning time of Germany's Denise Herrmann.

Close behind Reid were teammates Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) who placed 33rd and 35th, respectively. Egan was 2:02.9 back with two penalties, while Dunklee was 2:05.1 behind Herrmann with three penalties. Emily Dreissigacker (Morrisville, Vt.) rounded out the U.S. efforts in 92nd place with five penalties.

Herrmann shot clean for the second time in her career to capture the women's sprint in 18:51. Anais Bescond of France matched Herrmann on the shooting range but finished second, 27.2 seconds back. Marketa Davidova of Czech Republic finished third in her home stadium with one penalty, 49.7 seconds behind Herrmann.

The BMW IBU World Cup continues its four-day run in Nove Mesto on Friday with the men's 10km sprint featuring Americans Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.), Leif Nordgren (Hinesburg, Vt.), Jake Brown (Saint Paul, Minn.) and Paul Schommer (Appleton, Wis.). The race will be shown live on the Olympic Channel beginning at 11:30 a.m. EST.
