POKLJUKA, Slovenia (Jan. 25, 2020) – The U.S. mixed relay team of Leif Nordgren (Hinesburg, Vt.), Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.), Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) and Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) combined for a 12th-place finish in Saturday's 4x7.5-kilometer mixed relay at the BMW IBU World Cup in Pokljuka. The quartet finished 4 minutes, 10.6 seconds off the winning pace with two penalties and 12 spare rounds.

On the third leg of the relay, Dunklee moved the squad up five places to 11th to put them in contention for a top-10 finish. Dunklee cleaned from prone and used two spares in standing to make up the ground on the teams in front of her.

"Today was not our sexiest result," Dunklee said. "I've always had the utmost admiration and respect for athletes who continue to fight hard and dig deep when things are not going their way. That's the spirit I tried to bring to the relay today and I enjoyed the challenge of hunting down the teams ahead. We look forward to putting together a strong performance in Antholz."

The French team of Quentin Fillon Maillet, Simon Desthieux, Justine Braisaz and Julia Simon captured the mixed relay in 1:17:53.3 with eight spare rounds. Norway finished second with four spares, 40.6 seconds back. Germany, with five spares, placed third, 1:01.4 behind France.

The victory made it a sweep for France as earlier in the day the duo of Anais Bescond and Emilien Jacquelin won the single mixed relay in 38:33.4 with five spare rounds. Second place went to Estonia's Regina Oja and Rene Zahkna, with three spares, 5.9 seconds back. Austrian teammates Lisa Theresa Hauser and Simon Eder finished third with six spares, 12.1 seconds behind France.

The American duo of Jake Brown (Saint Paul, Minn.) and Joanne Reid (Grand Junction, Colo.) was 23rd.

Egan will race again in Sunday's women's 12.5km mass start as the World Cup concludes in Pokljuka. After that, the team begins preparation for the IBU World Championships in Antholz, Italy, Feb. 13-23.
