POKLJUKA, Slovenia (Jan. 24, 2020) – Propelled by a 20-for-20 performance on the shooting range, Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) raced to a career-best sixth-place finish in Friday's women's 15-kilometer individual event at the BMW IBU World Cup in Pokljuka. Egan's previous best in the 15km individual came at the 2017 IBU World Championships in Hochfilzen, Austria, where she finished 22nd. Today's top-10 finish also comes on the heels of a 16th-place in the 10km pursuit at last week's World Cup in Ruhpolding, Germany,

"It's wonderful to be back in the flower ceremony in Pokljuka, where I reached my first-ever top-6 last winter," said Egan. "I'm extremely happy to have met one of my career goals of hitting 20/20. I told my coach Armin (Auchentaller) this morning that I was going to do it today and he said, 'Yes you will,' -- so we agreed on the plan. It's so important to have the right attitude and confidence for shooting and I found that today. This is exactly where I want to be as we head into our final preparations for world championships."

Egan was 2 minutes, 10.4 seconds back of winner Denise Herrmann of Germany and was one of only eight athletes in the 100-woman field to shoot clean. She also earned a berth in the 30-woman field for Sunday's 12.5km mass start.

Herrmann took the lead at the first split and shot clean for the first time in her career to claim the win in 41:33.4. It was the fifth win of her career but first in the 15km individual. Sweden's Hanna Oeberg finished second with one penalty, 59.2 seconds back. Anais Bescond of France finished third, also shooting clean, 1:15.7 behind Herrmann.

Also competing for the U.S. on Friday were Joanne Reid (Grand Junction, Colo.) in 45th, Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) in 55th, and Emily Dreissigacker (Morrisville, Vt.) in 84th.

The BMW IBU World Cup continues from Pokljuka on Saturday with the mixed relays. The single mixed relay will lead things off at 7:15 a.m. EST with the duo of Reid and Jake Brown (Saint Paul, Minn.) for the U.S. At 9:00 a.m. EST, the 4x7.5km mixed relay will be held featuring the American team of  Leif Nordgren (Hinesburg, Vt.), Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.), Dunklee and Egan. Live television coverage of both races will be shown on the Olympic Channel.
