RUHPOLDING Germany (Jan. 15, 2020) – Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) and Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) secured starting spots in Sunday's pursuit with solid sprint races on Wednesday as the BMW IBU World Cup got underway in Ruhpolding. Dunklee finished 25th in the women's 7.5-kilometer sprint while Egan was close behind in 28th place.

Dunklee had a single prone penalty to finish 1 minute, 34.9 seconds off the winning time, while Egan had her lone penalty in the standing stage to finish 1:40.9 back. It was Egan's best sprint performance of the season, coming off a previous season-best 32nd at last week's BMW IBU World Cup in Oberhof, Germany.

"Today's race was very tight with easy conditions on the range and lots of athletes shooting clean," said Dunklee. "Clare and I will start near the middle of the pursuit and I look forward to opportunities to chase people down."

Tiril Eckhoff of Norway took the lead in the women's sprint with a clean prone stage and never looked back, storming around the tracks for the victory in 18:55.5. Her clean-shooting win propelled Eckhoff past Italy's Dorothea Wierer in the Yellow Bib of the World Cup leader. Sweden's Hanna Oeberg finished second, also shooting clean, 29.7 seconds back, while Wierer was third, 36.8 seconds behind Eckhoff with clean shooting.

Deedra Irwin (Pulaski, Wis.), competing in her first career World Cup sprint, placed 79th (+3:01.8/+2), while Hallie Grossman (South Burlington, Vt.) was 93rd in just her second World Cup sprint (+4:00.6/+3). They will team up with Dunklee and Egan in Friday's women's 4x6km relay.

"It's great to have some of our younger athletes here getting some World Cup experience and we are all very excited for Friday's relay," added Dunklee.

The BMW IBU World Cup continues from Ruhpolding on Thursday with the men's 10km sprint, featuring Americans Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.), Leif Nordgren (Hinesburg, Vt.), Paul Schommer (Appleton, Wis.) and Jake Brown (Saint Paul, Minn.).
