ANTHOLZ-ANTERSELVA, Italy (Feb. 20, 2020) – Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) and Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.) moved up eight places in the second half of Thursday's single mixed relay to place 11th in the 30-team field at the IBU World Championships in Antholz. The American duo finished 1 minute, 39.5 seconds back with one penalty and nine spare rounds.

Dunklee got off to a shaky start in her first trip to the range on the opening leg, using all three spares in prone and incurring a trip to the penalty loop. The team was in 22nd position when she exited the penalty loop. Undeterred, Dunklee rebounded quickly by cleaning from standing to move the U.S. up to 14th position as she made the first exchange with Doherty.

On the second leg, Doherty needed two spare rounds in both of his trips to the shooting range to bump the team down to 19th at the halfway point. The second half of the race, however, was lights out for the Americans as they used just two spare rounds with Dunklee cleaning prone and Doherty cleaning standing. Doherty passed the team from Estonia on the final loop to secure the 11th-place finish.

"Even with our difficulties on the range early on we were able to refocus and shoot our way back into it," said Doherty. "That is the poise we need for the relays Saturday."

Norway's Johannes Thingnes Boe and Marte Olsbu Roeiseland teamed up to win the gold medal, using just six spare rounds in their 34:19.9 victory. The German team of Franziska Preuss and Erik Lesser won the silver medal with five spare rounds, 17.6 seconds back. France's Emilien Jacquelin and Anais Bescond secured the bronze medal with four spare rounds, 29.8 seconds behind Norway.

Following a rest day on Friday, the final two days of the IBU World Championships will be held on Saturday and Sunday. The men's and women's relay are set to take place Saturday with the men's and women's mass start races concluding the event on Sunday.
