U.S. 15th in Youth Men's Relay

OSRBLIE, Slovakia (January 29, 2019) – The youth relays took center stage Tuesday on the third day of competition at the 2019 IBU Youth/Junior World Championships in Osrblie, Slovakia.The U.S. youth men's team placed 15th in the 26-team field of their 3x7.5-kilometer relay, while the American women's squad placed 19th in their 3x6km race.

Maxime Germain (Anchorage, Alaska/Alaska Biathlon), Bjorn Westervelt (Stowe, Vt./Craftsbury Biathlon) and Vincent Bonacci (Salt Lake City, Utah/Soldier Hollow Biathlon) teamed up in the youth men's relay to finish 4 minutes, 47.9 seconds behind the winning team from Germany. The American trio used 14 spares and had two penalties on the shooting range. The silver medal went to Slovenia while Italy took home the bronze medal.

In the youth women's relay, the team of Emma Stertz (Grand Rapids, Minn./Mt. Itasca), Lina Farra (Heber City, Utah/Team Soldier Hollow) and Helen Wilson (Eagle River, Alaska/Alaska Biathlon) were 19th in the 25-team field. They incurred two penalties and used 10 spare rounds to finish 7:22.8 behind gold-medal winning Norway. Stertz had a clean round from prone. Germany placed second while France was third.

Competition continues on Wednesday in Osrblie with the junior relays.
