Cervenka Leads Team USA in Youth Sprints

OTEPAA, Estonia (March 2, 2018) – Vasek Cervenka (Grand Rapids, Minn./Mt. Itasca) was the top American finisher in the youth sprints as the IBU Youth/Junior World Championships reached its fifth day of competition on Friday in Estonia. Cervenka placed 24th in the youth men’s 7.5-kilometer sprint, with three penalties, one minute, 59.2 seconds off the winning time.

The sprint competitors were greeted with -10C temperatures and wind gusts at the shooting range. Mikhail Pervushin of Russia took his third gold medal of the week with clean shooting and a winning time of 20:17.3. Behind Pervushin, the silver medal went to Tommaso Giacomel of Italy, also with clean shooting, 21.9 seconds back. Vitezslav Hornig of Czech Republic took the bronze medal with one penalty, 38.6 seconds back.

Other U.S. finishes in the youth men’s sprint were Eli Nielsen (Stehekin, Wash./Methow Valley Biathlon) in 42nd, with just one penalty, Garrett Beckrich (Grand Rapids, Minn./Mt. Itasca) in 46th, and Maxime Germain (Anchorage, Alaska/Alaska Biathlon) in 74th.

In the youth women’s 6k sprint, Emma Stertz (Grand Rapids, Minn./Mt. Itasca) was the top American in 52nd place, 2:44.2 off the winning time with two penalties. Grace Gilliland (Eagle River, Alaska/Alaska Biathlon), with just one penalty, was 55th, Lexie Madigan (Truckee, Calif./Auburn Ski Club) finished 70th, and Helen Wilson (Eagle River, Alaska/Alaska Biathlon) was 72nd.

Elvira Oeberg of Sweden, despite one penalty, won the youth women’s sprint gold medal in 19:46.7. Finland’s Heidi Nikkinen, also with one penalty, finished second, 13.1 seconds behind. Third place went to Oeberg’s clean-shooting teammate, Amanda Lundstroem, 16.7 seconds back.

Competition continues on Saturday with the junior men’s and women’s sprints, as well as the youth women’s pursuit.
