RUHPOLDING, Germany (January 11, 2018) – Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) came out of the gate on fire Thursday at the BMW IBU World Cup 5 in Ruhpolding. Dunklee posted the fastest ski time on the opening loop of the 15-kilometer individual event among the field of 102 women. However, three penalties on her four trips to the shooting range slowed Dunklee’s charge as she finished in 27th place, 3 minutes, 2.7 seconds off the winning time of Italy’s Dorothea Wierer.

On the day, Dunklee recorded the 14th-fastest course time and 15th-fastest ski time. She had one penalty at each of the first three shooting stages, but cleaned in her final standing stage.

“This felt like the first ‘normal’ race I’ve had this season after a roller coaster of lows and highs,” said Dunklee. “It’s comforting and a good sign going forward. I was inspired watching fellow North American and underdog, Canada’s Rosanna Crawford, land on the podium.”

Crawford enjoyed a career-best third place with clean shooting, 21.2 seconds back of Wierer who also shot clean with a winning time of 41:29. Second place went to Finland’s Kaisa Makarainen, 12.7 seconds behind Wierer with a single penalty. Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), with three penalties on the range, placed 57th, 4:26.3 off the pace.

The BMW IBU World Cup 5 continues on Friday with the men’s 4x7.5km relay starting at 8:30 a.m. EST. Toeing the line for Team USA will be Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.), Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minn.), Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) and Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.).
