RUHPOLDING, Germany (January 10, 2018) – Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.) turned in the top performance for the American team during Wednesday’s men’s 20-kilometer individual race at the BMW IBU World Cup 5 in Ruhpolding. Doherty placed 31st in the field of 107, crossing the line 4 minutes, 13.6 seconds behind the winner.

A warm and clear afternoon greeted the men’s field, and there was a light wind on the shooting range, making for good shooting conditions.

Doherty used that to his advantage, hitting 18 of 20 targets. Coming off last week’s sprint in Oberhof where he missed four of 10 targets, Doherty rebounded nicely today. He had a miss in opening prone and another in opening standing, but finished by cleaning his last two trips to the range.

“I am happy with the race today,” Doherty said. “I left some room for improvement on the range. It was a big step in the right direction from last week. We had very fast conditions on the course today and our waxing staff did a great job as usual.”

Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) and Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) also placed in the top 40, finishing 36th and 37th, respectively, both with three penalties. Burke was 4:35 off the winning time, while Bailey was just 1.4 seconds behind Burke.

Martin Fourcade of France took the lead after the first prone stage and never looked back in winning the men’s 20k. He hit 19-of-20 shots and crossed the finish line in 44:27.9. It was Fourcade’s fourth consecutive win. Ondrej Moravec of Czech Republic shot clean to finish in a season-best second place, 1:01 back. Third place went to Norway’s Johannes Thingnes Boe, with one penalty, 1:06.3 behind Fourcade.

Doherty, Burke and Bailey will be joined by Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minn.) for Friday’s 4x7.5km men’s relay.

The world cup in Ruhpolding continues on Thursday with the women’s 15-kilometer individual race. On the start list for the U.S. team are Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) and Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). Racing begins at 8:20 a.m. EST and can be seen live at
