NOVE MESTO, Czech Republic (Dec. 23, 2018) – Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) punctuated 2018 with her second career-best performance in the span of two weeks. In Sunday's final race of the BMW IBU World Cup in Nove Mesto, Egan turned in the best mass start finish of her career, crossing the line in 14th place. That eclipsed her previous best mass start finish of 23rd set last year.

"It feels great to end 2018 on such a high," said Egan. "Today's race was tough but I'm satisfied with my performance, especially my clean last stage."

Egan completed the 12.5-kilometer women's mass start 1 minute, 22.3 seconds behind winner Anastasiya Kuzmina of Slovakia. After one miss in each of her first three shooting stages, Egan finished with a clean standing stage to propel her up the standings.

"Racing in the mass start is a privilege and I'm grateful to my U.S. Biathlon teammates, staff, ski service team, sponsors and especially my coach for helping me get here. I'm ready for a break but already motivated for racing in 2019."

Kuzmina won the women's mass start with two penalties in 35:34.4. Second place went to her teammate Paulina Fialkova, also with two penalties, 12.1 seconds back. Anais Chevalier of France made a late charge to claim third place, 13.3 seconds behind Kuzmina.

Following the Christmas break, the BMW IBU World Cup series resumes in Oberhof, Germany, Jan. 7-13.
