RUHPOLDING, Germany (January 14, 2017) – Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) will be the lone U.S. participant in Sunday's women's pursuit after placing 33rd in Saturday's women's 7.5-kilometer sprint at the BMW IBU World Cup 5 in Ruhpolding. Her time of 23 minutes, 5.3 seconds was 2:13.5 off the winning time set by Finland's Kaisa Makarainen.

After an overnight snowfall, more light snow accompanied by light winds began falling just before the start of the women's sprint. Dunklee didn't seem to be affected by the course conditions as she turned in the second-fastest course time on the opening loop, helped by the pacing of eventual silver medalist Gabriela Koukalova of Czech Republic.

"I put myself in the race right from the start, taking advantage of a great ride behind Gabi for a loop," Dunklee said. "Unfortunately, my pace fell off in the loops after that and my range performance was mediocre."

Dunklee missed one target in prone and another in standing to put her out of contention for a top-20 finish, but she will start Sunday's pursuit close behind the four racers in front of her, including Ukraine's Valj Semerenko and Germany's Franziska Preuss.

"I will have a great pack of athletes within two seconds ahead of me to chase tomorrow," said Dunklee.

Makarainen had clean shooting to take her first victory of the season with a winning time of 20:51.8. Koukalova also shot clean to place seconds, 22 seconds back, while Germany's Laura Dahlmeier matched the top two on the range but finished third, 30.1 seconds back.

The other three American competitors failed to qualify for Sunday's pursuit by not finishing in the top 60. Joanne Reid (Boulder, Colo.) was 71st (+3:25.2/+2), Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) finished 77th (+3:51/+3) and Maddie Phaneuf (Old Forge, N.Y.) was 94th (+4:36.5/+2). Full women's sprint results are available here.

The BMW IBU World Cup 5 concludes on Sunday with the pursuit races. The men's 12.5k race, featuring Americans Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.), Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) and Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.) begins at 5:30 a.m. EST, with the women's 10k event to follow at 8:45 a.m. EST. Live streaming coverage of both races can be seen at
