ANNECY-LE GRAND BORNAND, France (December 17, 2017) – In the final race of the calendar year, Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) raced to a 20th-place finish on Sunday in the women’s 12.5-kilometer mass start at Annecy-Le Grand Bornand. Dunklee hit 17 of 20 targets on the range in front of a boisterous crowd that packed the stadium and lined the course.

“I'm very impressed with the amount of fans in such a small place,” said Dunklee. “I couldn't hear any of my coaches in course because the roar of the crowd was so loud.”

Dunklee’s time was 1 minute, 16.3 seconds behind Frenchwoman Justine Braisaz, who gave the thousands of French fans in Le Grand Bornand reason to cheer by winning the mass start with clean shooting in 37:19.4, the first World Cup victory in her career. Iryna Kryuko of Belarus matched Braisaz on the shooting range to finish second, 11.2 seconds back for her first-ever World Cup podium. The Belarusian held off Germany’s Laura Dahlmeier who finished third, 19.9 seconds behind with two penalties.

Dunklee heads into the brief holiday break with a renewed confidence following her sixth-place finish in Saturday’s pursuit.

I'm happy to head into the break with some good results behind me,” she said.

In the men’s 15k mass start held later in the day, Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished 23rd, with teammate Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.) coming in right behind him in 24th. Bailey had three penalties on the range and Doherty had four.

Martin Fourcade gave the partisan French crowd exactly what they wanted with a clean-shooting performance to take the victory in 36:30.3 and sweep the mass start competitions for France. Second place went to sprint/pursuit double winner Johannes Thingnes Boe of Norway, with two penalties, 3.9 seconds back. Erik Lesser of Germany finished third, also shooting clean, 6.2 seconds back.

The teams now have a couple weeks off for the holiday break before action resumes with the BMW IBU World Cup 4 in Oberhof, Germany, Jan. 4-7.
