ANTHOLZ-ANTERSELMA, Italy (January 22, 2016) - A 17th-place finish by Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) in Friday's men's sprint at the BMW IBU World Cup 6 in Antholz-Anterselma, Italy, highlighted a race that saw all four U.S. team members qualify for Saturday's pursuit.

On a clear, windless, picture-perfect day for biathlon, Burke cleaned prone and had one miss in standing, crossing the line in the 10-kilometer race in 23 minutes and 50.8 seconds.

"I am really happy with how I executed my race today," said Burke. "I wanted to be aggressive right from the start and to really push in the range and I was able to do that. Although this was not one of my best results, I think this was one of my best performances in a sprint race. Unfortunately, I think we made a mistake with my ski selection today and you can't get away with that in a field this competitive. We will do everything to make sure that does not happen again tomorrow. The finishing times stayed really close so it should make for an exciting pursuit tomorrow."

Also qualifying for tomorrow's 12.5km pursuit were Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.), Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minn.) and Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.), giving the U.S. a full squad in the 60-man race. Bailey tied for 32nd, with two penalties, and a time of 24:16.6. Nordgren was 43rd (24:31.4/+1) and Doherty placed 49th (24:41.7/+1).

Germany's Simon Schempp won the Antholz sprint for the third year in a row, shooting clean and finishing in 23:01.2. Second place went to Russia's Maxim Tsvetkov who also shot clean, 5.8 seconds back. Norway's Tarjei Boe shot clean to finish third, 10.8 seconds behind. Full men's sprint results are available here.

The men's and women's pursuit races were also conducted Friday at the IBU Cup 6 in Arber, Germany, with the U.S. enjoying two top-20 finishes in the women's 10km event. Hannah Dreissigacker (Morrisville, Vt.) finished 16th in 39:49.1, with five penalties, and teammate Maddie Phaneuf (Old Forge, N.Y.) was close behind in 19th, with three penalties and a time of 40:01.4. Emily Dreissigacker (Morrisville, Vt.) was 44th (43:12.4/+3).

"It was a fun race, and a great opportunity to practice skiing and shooting head-to-head," Hannah Dreissigacker stated. "I was super-psyched to clean both prone stages and sit briefly in 6th place, but then I really blew it in the first standing, with four misses. I will be replaying the things I did wrong in that stage for a while."

Russia swept the women's pursuit podium with Olga Iakushova (36:34.1/+4), Svetlana Sleptsova (36:54.2/+3) and Anna Shcherbinnia (36:58.7/+2) leading the field. Full women's pursuit results can be found here.

"I'm not satisfied with today's race, but it was really fun to be right in the mix," said Phaneuf. "The last loop was fun and hard; skiing with two girls, fighting for the top-20. Huge thanks to the wax techs and coaches for this awesome weekend of racing."

Max Durtschi (Ketchum, Idaho) led the American effort in the men's 12.5km pursuit with a 40th-place finish (38:38.3/+4). Patrick Johnson (Truckee, Calif.) followed in 49th place (40:50.1/+7) and Wynn Roberts (Battle Lake, Minn.) was 54th (42:26.6/+7).

Russia's Yury Shopin took the gold medal with just one penalty and a time of 33:29.9. Second place went to Germany's Philipp Horn, also with one penalty and a time of 34:00.1, while Aliaksandr Darozhka of Belarus was third in 34:11.0 with three penalties. Full men's pursuit results are available here.
