RUHPOLDING, Germany (January 14, 2016) - Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) was the lone U.S. qualifier for Saturday's mass start after finishing 50th in the women's 15-kilometer individual race on Thursday at the BMW IBU World Cup 5 in Ruhpolding, Germany. Dunklee is 22nd in the World Cup rankings.

Despite the sunny conditions, it was an otherwise disappointing day for Team USA with only three clean rounds among the four American competitors. Dunklee had five penalties, equaling an additional five minutes added to her time, and did not have a clean round, but topped the U.S. effort with a time of 45:33.8.

"This sport sure knows how to keep a person humble," said Dunklee following the race. "A mediocre range performance held me back today."

Joanne Reid (Boulder, Colo.) competing in her first-ever World Cup, placed 72nd with a time of 47:40.4. She had a clean round in her first standing shooting and ended the day with four total penalties. Her performance was not lost on the veteran Dunklee.

"Our rookie, Joanne Reid, who recently switched over from cross-country skiing, put together a great World Cup debut and has been impressive in training all week," Dunklee commented. "I am excited to see what more she will accomplish!"

Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was 74th, also with four penalties and a time of 47:46.9. She finished strong with clean rounds at the last two shooting stages. Annelies Cook (Saranac Lake, N.Y.), the first athlete out of the starting gate in the 96-woman field, struggled on the range with eight penalties and finished 88th with a time of 50:19.6.

Dorothea Wierer of Italy shot clean to give her a dominating lead and victory in the women's 15k individual. Her time of 40:19.9 put her 54.8 seconds ahead of Kaisa Makarainen of Finland and 1:09.9 in front of Gabriela Soukalova of Czech Republic. Both Makarainen and Soukalova had single penalties.

The BMW IBU World Cup  continues on Friday with the men's 4x7.5km relay beginning at 9:30 a.m. EST. The U.S. team is comprised of Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.), Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minn.), Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) and Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.). The race will be streamed live at www.eurovisionsports.tv/ibu.
