RUHPOLDING, Germany (January 13, 2016) - Hitting 19 of 20 targets and skiing through the heavy snow, Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished 14th among the 104-man field in the grueling men's 20-kilometer individual race on Wednesday as the BMW IBU World Cup 5 got underway in Ruhpolding, Germany. The strong finish moved Bailey up to 20th in the World Cup rankings and earned him a position in Saturday's 15km 30-man mass start.

The moderate to heavy snow made for slow, soft conditions on the course, but the wind was minimal. Still, only two competitors went clean hitting all 20 targets, and Bailey was just one of 15 athletes with only one miss. After a miss at the first prone position, Bailey went clean the rest of the way and hit the finish line with a time of 53:40.9.

"I am really happy with the performance today," said Bailey. "I had made a few mental adjustments following last week's disappointing last stage in the mass start and I was glad that I was able to stick to my game plan during the race. It felt good to clean the last three stages today. Now, it's on to the men's relay on Friday."

Martin Fourcade of France mastered the snowy conditions on the tracks to take the victory in the men's 20k individual, with a single penalty in 50:53.9. Second went to the man who beat him in last week's pursuit, Simon Eder of Austria, with one penalty 17.5 seconds back. Anton Shipulin of Russia finished third, also with one penalty, 28 seconds behind Fourcade.

The U.S. squad was able to claim two more of the top-30 finishes with Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minn.) placing 27th (54:26.7/+3) and Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) finishing 30th (54:39.1/+3). Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.) was 75th in 57:57.3 with three penalties. Full men's 20km individual results are available here.

The women's 15km individual takes center stage as the BMW IBU World Cup 5 continues on Thursday. The American contingent consists of Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.), Annelies Cook (Saranac Lake, N.Y.), Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and rookie Joanne Reid (Boulder, Colo.) making her first World Cup start. The race begins at 8:15 a.m. EST and will be streamed live at
