RUHPOLDING, Germany (January 18, 2015) - Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) duked it out with the race leaders for much of Sunday's 12.5-kilometer women's mass start event before finishing 16th as the IBU World Cup in Ruhpolding, Germany, wrapped up under blue skies and no wind.

Dunklee cleaned the first prone stage and left the range in ninth place with the lead pack. After going clean in the first standing, she skied her way into fourth place, just 5.9 seconds back of the leader. She entered the final standing stage in bronze-medal position, but missed two shots which knocked her back to 16th, a position she held to the finish for her best placement of the season in a time of 36:28.6 with three penalties.

"My goals today were to have fun, take whatever time I needed to settle and take good shots, especially in the first prone, and be patient on skis," said Dunklee. "On the fourth loop I left the range right behind Darya (Domracheva) and we steadily picked off people one by one. Toward the end of that loop, I looked up and suddenly realized that there were only two people ahead of me! But that is exactly where I want to be near the end of the race and I felt relaxed and comfortable heading into that final shooting."

Domracheva went on to claim the victory with a time of 35:17.5 with three penalties. Second went to Germany's Franziska Preuss, with two penalties, 16.5 seconds back, while Veronika Vitkova of Czech Republic finished third, with three penalties, 22.9 seconds back. Full women's results are available here.

In the men's 15km mass start, Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished 28th with a time of 38:07.9 with three penalties. The race ended with a thrilling three-way photo finish with Simon Schempp of Germany claiming the victory in 35:42.8. Second went to Quentin Fillon Maillet of France and third to Michal Slesingr of Czech Republic, all with the same time as well as clean shooting. Full men's results are available here.

Team USA now heads off to Italy for IBU World Cup 6 in Antholz, Jan. 21-25.
