RUHPOLDING, Germany (January 17, 2015) - Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) was the top finisher for Team USA in Saturday's snowy men's 10-kilometer sprint at the IBU World Cup in Ruhpolding, Germany. Bailey had just one miss in standing and crossed the line in 41st place with a time of 26:21.2.
Norway's Johannes Thingnes Boe took the win by going clean at the shooting range and crossing the line with a time of 23:59.2. A pair of Germans rounded out the top three, with Simon Schepp (24:23.7/+0) placing second and Arnd Peiffer (24:57.5/+1) third.
"I was definitely a little disappointed with the result today," said Bailey. "I felt decent skiing but the conditions were definitely not my favorite -- deep and slow. We thought the snow would be heaviest before the race and then taper off as the race went on, but in reality, it seemed to just get heavier and heavier throughout the race. Still, I hoped that with just one penalty, I could still be up there in the results. Now, I just have to wait and see if by some chance I get into the mass start tomorrow."
Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) finished 50th (26:45.5/+3) and Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.) was 80th (27:54.9/+1) to round out the U.S. results. Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minn.) did not start the race. Full race results are available here.
The World Cup in Ruhpolding wraps up on Sunday with the women's 12.5k mass start and men's 15k mass start. Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) will be racing for the U.S. in the women's race, and Bailey is a first reserve for the men's race. Live streaming coverage can be seen here starting at 6:30 a.m. EST for the women's race, and at 9:40 a.m. EST for the men's.
Also on Saturday, U.S. Biathlon announced additional athletes for upcoming international competitions. Joining the women's team for IBU World Cup 6 in Antholz, Italy, Jan. 22-25, will be Maddie Phaneuf (Old Forge, N.Y.) and Clare Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), while Russell Currier (Stockholm, Maine) will join the men's team for that event. Phaneuf and Currier will also compete at the Open European Championships, Jan. 27-Feb. 3 in Otepaa, Estonia, along with Doherty, Nordgren and Casey Smith (Winthrop, Wash.).
