POKLJUKA, Slovenia (December 21, 2014) – American biathletes Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) and Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished 22nd in their respective mass start races Sunday as the IBU World Cup in Pokljuka, Slovenia, came to a close.

Dunklee finished in 36:45 minutes with four penalties in the women’s 12.5-kilometer race. Kaisa Makarainen (FIN) won the race with a time of 34:18.8 and two penalties. France’s Anais Bescond finished second (34:26.4/+0), and Nadezhda Skardino (BLR) was third (34:34.6/+0).

Dunklee, who has been battling a cold, missed two targets at the first prone shooting stage, and one each over the next two stages, but cleaned the final standing stage.

“It was a beautiful, sunny day to end on in Slovenia and I had fun in my last race of 2014,” said Dunklee. “My body felt a lot better than yesterday and even though I missed a couple shots early in the race and lost touch with the lead pack, I had people to chase down every loop. Team USA is looking forward to the holiday break and some time back home. All the European athletes are jealous that we’ll have lots of snow; it looks like a green Christmas for everyone over here.”

Bailey had two penalties in the men’s 15k mass start race, missing one target at the first prone stage and one at the last standing. He moved up from 26th place to 19th after going clean at the third stage, but dropped back to 22nd after the miss in the final stage and crossed the line in 36:51.4.

“I was actually pretty satisfied with most of my race today,” Bailey said. “I felt better on the ski course and the shooting was pretty decent. The only issue was early on in the first prone stage. I had some trouble with my rifle and probably lost an extra 25 seconds getting that figured out. This made it pretty hard to recover and catch the rest of the pack. Other than that, I’m satisfied with the race and looking forward to the Christmas break.”

Anton Shipulin (RUS) took the men’s victory with a time of 35:16.8 and one penalty. Martin Fourcade (FRA) was second (35:18.0/+1) and Austria’s Simon Eder finished third (35:18.2/+1). Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) finished 27th with a time of 37:49.1 and six penalties.

The IBU World Cup season takes a break for the holidays before resuming in Oberhof, Germany, Jan. 6-11.
