POKLJUKA, Slovenia (December 19, 2014) – Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) hit 10 of 10 targets and skied across the line in a time of 24:12.9 to place 16th in Friday’s men’s 10-kilometer sprint at the IBU World Cup in Pokljuka, Slovenia. Bailey was just eight seconds out of 10th place and only 30 seconds from securing a medal. He was one of three Americans to qualify for tomorrow’s pursuit race.

Joining Bailey in Saturday’s pursuit will be Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.), who placed 26th (24:39.3/+2), and Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minn.) who finished 53rd (25:14.3/+1).

"I'm happy with the way my shooting has gone the first part of this season," said Bailey. "I changed some things over the summer and it’s nice to see that work paying off on the range. I can still improve on ski speed to where I will be knocking on the door of the podium.”

Russia’s Anton Shipulin won the sprint with clean shooting and a time of 23:18.6. Rounding out the top three on the podium were Dominik Landertinger (AUT) and Emil Hegle Svendsen (NOR). Both also had clean rounds with Landertinger crossing the line 11.9 seconds behind Shipulin and Svendsen coming in 24.1 seconds off the winning time.

Russell Currier (Stockholm, Maine) finished 96th (27:28.3/+6). Full results of the men’s sprint are available here.

Tomorrow’s pursuit races will feature the women’s 10km competition beginning at 5:15 a.m. (ET) with Americans Hannah Dreissigacker (Morrisville, Vt.) and Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) starting in 18th and 19th place, respectively. Dreissigacker will go off one minute after leader Gabriela Soukalova (CZE), while Dunklee will start just three seconds behind Dreissigacker.

The men’s 12.5km pursuit begins at 7:30 a.m. (ET). Bailey will begin 54 seconds after Shipulin, Burke will be 1:21 behind and Nordgren starts 1:56 back.

“It's going to be a really tight and exciting pursuit race tomorrow and the name of the game will be putting together a good time on the range,” Bailey added. “I know this course pretty well and it suits my style."
