HOCHFILZEN, Austria (December 13, 2014) - Team USA’s men posted a 14th-place finish in today’s 4x7.5-kilometer relay at World Cup 2. The squad - Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.), Leif Nordgren (Marine, Minn.) and Russell Currier (Stockholm, Maine) – crossed the finish with four misses and using 14 spares at the shooting range, and just over a lap back from the Russian team of Maxim Tsvetkov, Timofey Lapshin, Dmitry Malyshko and Anton Shipulin that won today’s relay with a time of 1:16:14.8/0+1, edging out France (Simon Fourcade, Jean Guillaume Beatrix, Simon Desthieux and Martin Fourcade) who finished second (1:16:35.0/0+4). Norway (Johannes Thingnes Boe, Emil Hegle Svendsen, Lars Helge Birkeland and Tarjei Boe) took third (1:16:42.7/0+10).

Bailey raced the opening leg for Team USA, quickly moving up from the 20th start position to third place at the 1.2km mark. Bailey used an extra shot in both prone and standing and tagged off to Burke with Team USA in 15th place. Burke took two extra shots in prone and one in standing, tagging to Nordgren with the team up to 11th place, 1:55 back of the leaders. With a miss and three extra shots in prone, and three misses and three extras in standing, Nordgren tagged Currier with the team in 17th place. Taking two extra shots in prone, and one in standing, Currier moved the team back up to 14th at the finish.

“Today was definitely a disappointing relay for the team,” Burke said. “We were not able to show what we are capable of. Lowell and I also struggled with ski selection, but hopefully we learned something for tomorrow’s pursuit. We won’t spend too much time dwelling on this result because we all know that anything can happen in biathlon.”

Earlier in the day, the women’s 4x6km relay was held with the German team of Luise Kummer, Franziska Hildebrand, Vanessa Hinz and Franziska Preuss taking the victory with a time of 1:11:40.4/0+8.
