Podium Finishes:
Cycling - Road Race (3 gold, 3 silver)
Will Groulx (1:04:02) surpassed teammate Brian Sheridan (1:04:04) by two seconds to take the gold medal in the men’s H1-2 class. Samantha Heinrich (1:21:07) beat out Argentina’s Mariela Delgado at the wire to win the women’s C1-5 title. Joe Berenyi (1:45:33) clinched the men’s C1-3 class gold medal with a one-second margin of victory over two Colombian cyclists. Ryan Boyle (1:01:21) cruised to the first podium-finish of the day with a silver medal in the mixed T1-2 class, while Will Lachenauer (1:22:36) battled two Canadians in the final sprint to secure the silver medal in the H3-5 class).
Swimming (1 silver, 1 gold, 3 bronze)
Ahalya Lettenberger set a Parapan Am meet record in the preliminaries en route to a gold-medal performance in the women’s 100m backstroke S8 (1:24.41), while Mallory Weggemann won bronze in the same event (1:27.24). Tom Miazga took silver in the men’s 100m backstroke S8 (1:13.49), while Leslie Cichocki earned bronze in the women’s 200m freestyle S14 (2:26.07). Haley Beranbaum raced to bronze in the women’s 100m freestyle S5 (1:48.16) and also qualified for Sunday morning’s final in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB5(4-5).
Other Results:
Boccia
The U.S. dropped preliminary matches today to Brazil (11-2), Canada (6-5) and Argentina (10-1) in the Team BC1/BC2 competition today and did not advance to the finals. Boccia play resumes tomorrow, August 9, with the individual BC1, BC2, BC3 and BC4 preliminary competitions.
Goalball
Marybai Huking and Eliana Mason of the USA Women’s Team made their Parapan Am Games debut with a quick 10-0 victory over El Salvador. USA men played a tough game against rival team, Canada, that nearly ended in a tie. Canada Men scored against the U.S. with less than 30 seconds left in the second half for a 5-4 victory. MORE.
Sitting Volleyball
The U.S. Parapan Men’s Sitting Team cruised past Colombia 25-17, 25-21, 25-13. Team USA, which needs to either win the Parapan American Games or finish second to Brazil to earn a berth into the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games next summer, resumes action tomorrow against Mexico.
Table Tennis
In women’s singles, Pamela Fontaine and Tara Profitt earned victories. Profitt advances to the Class 1-2 finals tomorrow against Brazil’s Catia Da Silva Oliveira. On the men’s side, Lim Ming Chui, Tahl Leibovitz, Ari Arratia and Benjamin Hadden recorded two wins each in the group stage. Group play resumes tomorrow, August 9.
Wheelchair Basketball
The men’s U.S. wheelchair basketball team handily defeated Colombia in tonight’s prelim competition with a final score of 70-42. Steve Serio was the high scorer of the game for the U.S. with a total of 18 pts. Team USA takes on Puerto Rico in prelim action on Sunday.
Wheelchair Rugby
The U.S. Wheelchair Rugby team opened with a decisive victory over Argentina in their opening game of the 2015 Toronto Parapan Am Games. Already up 36-12 at the half, the U.S. squad was in command throughout the game finishing with a 70-25 victory. The U.S. will be back on the court at the Mississauga Centre tomorrow at 9:30 EST time when they face Brazil. Play continues throughout the week with the semi -finals on Thursday, August 13th and finals on Friday, August 14th. MORE.
