Chris Mazdzer and Mara Marian arrive at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards at The Forum on March 11, 2018 in Inglewood, Calif.
The best things in life are worth waiting for, as Olympic luge medalist Chris Mazdzer and his wife Mara found out firsthand Thursday with the birth of their son Nicolai.
As Mazdzer shared on Instagram, Mara was in labor for 35 hours before an emergency cesarean section was necessary.
“It was incredible witnessing the strength of my wife through the entire process and how she handled such a difficult situation under pain, fever and distress,” Mazdzer wrote. “I am so fortunate that everyone is safe! Now I need to learn how to swaddle, change diapers and all of the millions of things that need to be done now being a ‘parent.’”
Nicolai is the first child for the Mazdzers, who were engaged in October 2019 and married in May 2020. The former Mara Marian was born in Romania and now runs an event planning studio she founded in Salt Lake City, where the couple now lives.
Originally from Saranac Lake, New York, Chris Mazdzer made history at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 by becoming the first U.S. man to win an Olympic singles luge medal. A three-time Olympian, Mazdzer won his first world championship medal in 2020 with a bronze in the team relay. Mazdzer completed the doubles portion with partner Jayson Terdiman, with whom he has competed in doubles since the PyeongChang Games.
