Whirlwind Year Continues As Luger Chris Mazdzer, Wife Mara, Announce They’re Expecting First Child

Chris Mazdzer makes a run during the men's luge training session ahead of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics on Feb. 6, 2014 in Sochi, Russia.

If 2020 didn’t go quite as planned, Olympic silver medalist luger Chris Mazdzer and new wife Mara already have something big to look forward to in 2021.

The couple announced this morning they’re expecting a baby boy in April. The little guy, referred to this point as just Baby Mazdzer — or #babymazdzer — will be their first child, although Chris made sure to note that their family is actually growing to four. After all, you can’t forget their fur baby, a red heeler-chihuahua mix named Kiki.

“We are so excited to announce that a little baby Mazdzer will be coming into the world April 2021!” wrote Mazdzer, whose Olympic medal in 2018 was the first by a U.S. man in singles luge. “We cannot wait for this little guy to change everything about our lives and turn our family of 3 (Kiki is our current child) into a family of 4. Thank you @mara_mazdzer for carting our little boy into the world 😘Cannot wait!!!!!!!!!!!”

It’s already been a busy and unpredictable year for the couple.

Soon after their engagement in October 2019, three-time Olympian Chris was back on the road for a busy luge season in which he competed in both singles and doubles, but one that also saw him battle injuries for the season straight year.

That was only the beginning.

Although the season wrapped up just before the COVID-19 pandemic halted sports around the world, the lockdowns meant they had to forego the big celebration with family and friends when they tied the knot in May.

“Dancing With the Stars” alum Chris also underwent offseason surgeries on his shoulder and elbow, and moved from his hometown of Saranac Lake, New York, to Salt Lake City, where Mara works as a wedding planner.

Now, Chris is back in the Adirondacks preparing for the 2020-21 luge season, although the twists continue as he missed this week’s USA Luge Start Championship in Lake Placid while quarantining, and the wait to compete again will continue as the U.S. team elected to skip the fall world cup stops due to the coronavirus.

Mara Mazdzer, meanwhile, is staying back in Utah, where she’s taking everything in stride. In her post announcing Baby Mazdzer, she described her pregnancy experience so far as “a wild few months.”

“So far I’ve cried over a Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich and also while watching ‘Great British Baking Show’ (among countless other unreasonable instances),” she wrote. “I’ve been nauseous and sick practically 24/7 but never get to actually throw up, and now although my nausea is subsiding my heartburn and indigestion are off the charts and that makes me cry sometimes too 😆 0/10 I do not recommend pregnancy.

“Chris and Kiki have been taking great care of me, suddenly Kiki really likes to sleep by my growing tummy and understands when I’m feeling terrible 🤍. Chris left to NY to start his luge season and I’ll just be over here moving into our new house and eating everything in sight…” she wrote to her Instagram. “6 months to go until our little guy is here!”
