Five-time Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian hopes to make 2021 another year in the Olympic pool, but it will be a joyous year no matter what.

Adrian announced Saturday on Instagram that he and his wife Hallie are expecting their first child next year, a daughter.

“Big news! Baby Adrian coming February of 2021! #futuregirldad #cantwait,” Adrian wrote.

Nathan and Hallie got engaged in 2017 after dating for six years. They were both Pac-12 college athletes, with Nathan on the swim team at Cal and Hallie on the diving team at Stanford. But they never crossed paths until they met at a dinner party at Adrian’s home. They were married in 2018 in Northern California and currently make their home in Oakland.

Accompanying the post was a photo of Nathan and Hallie proudly holding a tiny Tokyo shirt. Tokyo remains the professional goal for Adrian, 31, who is seeking to compete at his fourth career Olympic Games. Adrian underwent treatment last year for testicular cancer, taking him out of the pool for the longest time of his career. But Adrian returned in time for the 2019 world championships, winning two gold medals to bring his career total to 10.

Should Adrian qualify for Tokyo he will look to keep intact a gold-medal winning streak. Adrian has won at least one gold medal at each Olympic Games so far, starting at Beijing in 2008. Adrian has eight career Olympic medals overall, and formerly held the American record in the 50-meter freestyle.
