The first official day of competition at the Pan American Games Lima 2019 started off on a great foot for Team USA. Alex Lee kicked off the day winning Team USA's first gold medal of the Games in taekwondo.
From modern pentathlon to rugby,Team USA athletes proved they were here to compete.
The games will continue until Aug. 11 featuring over 600 Team USA athletes, with 12 sports up for qualification opportunities for the upcoming Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Modern pentathlete Samantha Achterberg won silver, which earned her a spot on the roster for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Modern pentathlon is the only sport that has potential for individuals to qualify by for the upcoming Games.
