On Sunday, the U.S. women’s national team made history and won the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, making the U.S. the second-ever back-to-back champion (Germany; 2003, 2007) after defeating the Netherlands, 2-0, in Lyon, France.
The USWNT was flawless in the group stage after beating Thailand, Chile and Sweden with 18 goals scored and no goals scored against. The women then went on to topple Spain, tournament host France, England and finally the Netherlands in the knockout stage.
Megan Rapinoe won a treble of awards after securing a gold medal, Golden Ball and Golden Boot, which is given to a World Cup champion, tournament’s best player and top goal-scorer, respectively. Rose Lavelle notably won the Bronze Ball, while Alex Morgan won the Silver Boot with six goals and three assists of her own.
