By Todd Kortemeier | April 29, 2019, 4:23 p.m. (ET)

Sloane Stephens and Jozy Altidore announced their engagement on Instagram on April 29, 2019.

Olympians Sloane Stephens and Jozy Altidore may have just announced their engagement Monday, but their relationship began as childhood friends growing up in Florida.

Altidore, a striker for the U.S. men’s national team, and Stephens, the 2017 US Open tennis champion, reconnected in 2016 and began their relationship. It wasn’t always easy to make it work, with Stephens competing around the globe on the tennis tour and Altidore playing in Canada for Toronto F.C. But Altidore was there courtside in Flushing, New York, in 2017 to watch Stephens compete on the way to winning her first Grand Slam title.

Both Altidore and Stephens announced the engagement on Instagram on Monday, with each caption emphasizing the word “forever.” Both also utilized a heart emoji.

“Forever starts now,” Altidore wrote.

“Forever yes,” was Stephens’ caption.

Stephens, 26, is the No. 8 women’s tennis player in the world. Besides her 2017 US Open title, she has six WTA singles titles to her name. She made her Olympic debut in Rio in 2016 and is a strong contender for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
