True love overcomes even the largest of rivalries. Just ask Meghan Duggan.
The 2018 Olympic ice hockey gold medalist married Gillian Apps on Saturday in Pownal, Maine. Apps also played ice hockey – but for Team Canada.
Duggan served as captain for Team USA at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, where the U.S. women’s team defeated Canada to win its first gold medal since it first did so at the sport’s Olympic debut 20 years ago. Over the course of her career, she has also helped Team USA to two Olympic silver medals, seven world titles and six Four Nations Cups.
Apps, meanwhile, comes from a line of Canadian hockey players, as the granddaughter of Hockey Hall of Famer Syl Apps and daughter of NHL player Syl Apps Jr. She played for Team Canada at three Olympic Winter Games, playing against her now-wife at Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 before retiring from her international team.
In the 2016-17 season, Duggan played for the Boston Pride (NWHL) while Apps worked as assistant coach for the women’s hockey program at Boston College. The two are not the first hockey couple to look past the North American feud; former captains Julie Chu, a four-time Olympic medalist for Team USA, and Caroline Ouellette, a four-time Olympic medalist for Canada, announced the arrival of their first child last November.
The U.S.-Canada ice hockey rivalry is one of the most storied in team sports, with the two nations competing for every gold medal since the women’s world championship began in 1990 (10-8 in Canada’s favor, with the U.S. earning the last four).
Several American teammates joined in on Duggan’s celebratory weekend, with Olympians Kacey Bellamy, Brianna Decker and Erika Lawler serving as bridesmaids.
After facing off across from each other at five world championships and two Olympic Games, the couple now faces life’s future adventures together.
