Five For Friday: Triathlon Grand Final

Katie Zaferes, a 2016 Olympian, chases after a world title on Saturday in Gold Coast, Australia.

The world championship medals are based on World Triathlon Series rankings, and for the women it has all come down to Saturday’s race. Zaferes leads Great Britain’s Vicky Holland by 34 points, which makes the title race simple. If Zaferes finishes ahead of Holland, she wins the gold; Holland wins if she’s ahead of Zaferes in Saturday’s race.

Zaferes has medaled in five of her last six WTS races.

Zaferes is among eight U.S. athletes competing in the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Gold Coast.

Three American women are among the top eight in the season standings. Kirsten Kasper is in seventh place and Taylor Spivey is eighth. Joining them in the elite women’s race are Summer Cook and Chelsea Burns.

Lining up in Sunday’s elite men’s race are Matt McElroy, Eli Hemming and Morgan Pearson. McElroy is ranked 30th and picked up a pair of world cup medals in March.
