What are Team USA athletes — Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls — up to when they're not competing? They're training. They're practicing. They're traveling to competitions and meets and games and tournaments. They're relaxing. They're getting engaged and married and having children. They're taking hard-earned vacations. Or retiring. Or coping with the raw emotions that come from losing and winning. And they're sharing. Through the reach of social media, we're able to follow along on their often extraordinary journeys. We'll catch you up each week on what's "Red, White & Trending."

Minds On Puerto Rico

Catching up with almost unimaginable loss and devastation has become all to common these past few weeks, and Puerto Rico sustained historic damage as Hurricane Maria made landfall. One Olympic family with significant ties to the island is the Steffens family, with Olympic water polo champions Jessica and Maggie, whose father, Carlos, played internationally for Puerto Rico. Maggie, fresh off a 29-hour return trip from vacationing in New Zealand, had helping on her mind, along with her brother and sister.

Sister Jessica, also an Olympic water polo champion, shared some of the most visible signs of Maria’s devastation.

Irma’s Impact

Three-time Olympic volleyball player and silver medalist Heather Bown offers just one of the millions of day-to-day, real-life details thrown into flux that, while significantly more mundane than those faced by the less fortunate when the storm hit, made for handfuls of logistic snafus along the way. Now an assistant volleyball coach at a high school in Florida, Bown’s schedule needed a whole lot of scribbling.

Heavy Medals

A week ago, it was a sneak peek of the Olympic torches. Now, Olympic hopefuls can take a look at an even more coveted reminder of what all this training is for …

So Long, Calgary

From thoughts of a future Olympic host city to a training home in a former Olympic host city, there’s PyeongChang bobsled hopeful Lauren Gibbs, who had at least a little fun during a long, late-summer run of training in Calgary. And how’s this for a piece of advice? Thanks to teammate Brittany Reinbolt, it comes with photographic accompaniment.

Gibbs wasn’t done with that location, either …

Then, it was #gibbsout …

Cross-Over Star?

Fifty-five million. That’s 55,000,000 followers on Twitter for pop singing star Britney Spears, who tweeted her enthusiasm for LA2028. And gymnastics.

For good measure, she’s already receiving high-profile coaching offers …

Seasons Greetings

How close is winter? In Lake Placid, it’s looking pretty near.

Winter is on an even nearer horizon in New Zealand, where we find a faction of Team USA’s alpine skiers, including Olympic champion Ted Ligety, shredding in Queenstown …

Team USA On The The Small Screen

Let’s play the feud! …

Team USA On The Big Screen

The countdown is on to new Celtics guard and Olympian Kyrie Irving coming to the big screen. The film features not only Irving, but a host of Team USA standouts, including Shaquille O'Neal, Reggie Miller and the four-time Olympian Lisa Leslie, whose timeline featured some priceless pics. And some dancing.

Workout Wonder

Dan McCoy, a member of the Paralympic sled hockey team that won gold in Sochi, has a twist on the pull-up:

The Cool Kids

One would take it as plausible that the son of two young, stylish and elite soccer players, including Olympic gold medalist Sydney Leroux Dwyer, cracks the lineup of the coolest kids in any room. Not so, according to his mother.

There’s no telling what life has in store for the newborn daughter of Serena Williams, but she already has a head start on her fitness.

The Grown-Up Cool Kids

When it comes to cool, it’s tough to pack these kinds of experiences into one week, but such is the life of two-time Rio swimming medalist Conor Dwyer, who took a dip in Lake Michigan and sang at a Cubs in Chicago, then hooked up with actor Zac Efron and his brother for a charity triathlon in Malibu for a cool 1.6 million likes on Efron's Instagram page.
