Men’s Story of the Day: Team Shuster opened the tournament by posting a narrow 7-6 win over Team Clark. Three-time Olympian John Shuster and fellow 2006 Olympic bronze medalist Joe Polo needed all their experience in the opening game of the trials. Team Shuster also features 2014 Olympian John Landsteiner. Team Clark called timeout to discuss strategy with the score tied 5-5 in the ninth end and picked up one for a 6-5 lead with two ends left, but Team Shuster iced the victory with two points in the 10th end.

Women’s Story of the Day: In a rollicking scoring slugfest in the only women’s game of the day, Team Sinclair scored three in the first end, but Team Roth rallied to tie the game 4-4 before Team Sinclair added three in the fifth end en route to a 9-8 win. Skip Jamie Sinclair’s final stone knocked out a potential tying marker to clinch the victory over Team Roth, which finished fifth in the most recent world championships. Sinclair said the win eased her team’s nerves and is providing a confidence boost.

Where Things Stand: After one day, Team McCormick leads the men’s field with two wins and Team Sinclair took the opening day lead for the women.

What’s Next: Sunday is a big day with six matches set. In men’s competition, it’s Team McCormick vs. Team Shuster, Team Birr vs. Team Clark, Team Shuster vs. Team Brown and Team McCormick vs. Team Birr. On the women’s side, Team Christensen takes to the competition for the first time with matches against both Team Roth and Team Sinclair.
