Thirty-five teams are in Hermosa Beach in Southern California this week to compete in the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships.
The championships are the first event in the inaugural Team USA Summer Champions Series, presented by Comcast. Events will also be held in track and field, swimming and diving.
The tournament, featuring 24 women’s teams and 11 men’s teams, goes through Saturday.
The tournament is a trials event for the USA Volleyball collegiate beach national team and could begin the path toward winning spots on the U.S. Olympic Team for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
Among those in Hermosa Beach are the USC women’s duo of Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes, who helped the Trojans win an NCAA championship last week. They also won the world university championships last year in Estonia. Hughes and Claes are among eight USC female athletes competing in the collegiate beach championships.
Other teams in the women’s field include sisters Madison and McKenna Witt of Arizona, Sarah Sponcil and Savannah Slattery of Loyola Marymount, and Delaney Knudsen and Madalyn Roh of NCAA runners-up Pepperdine.
UCLA’s Jackson Bantle and Hagen Smith are top contenders in the men’s field. Other teams include Lucas Yoder and Michael Saeta of USC and UC Irvine, respectively; Louis Richard and Matt Butler of Long Beach State, and Brett Rosenmeier and Colton Cowell of Hawaii.
