What are Team USA athletes — Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls — up to when they're not competing? They're training. They're practicing. They're traveling to competitions and meets and games and tournaments. They're relaxing. They're getting engaged and married and having children. They're taking hard-earned vacations. Or retiring. Or coping with the raw emotions that come from losing and winning. And they're sharing. Through the reach of social media, we're able to follow along on their often extraordinary journeys. We'll catch you up each week on what's "Red, White & Trending."

 

Simply The Best

When it comes to effusive praise, two-time Olympic gold medalist Kobe Bryant doesn’t exactly chuck it around like so many practice jumpers. So, from his perspective as a now-retired basketball legend, one of the all-time greats can still make a lasting impression with the use of a goat hashtag.

Bryant himself was in the Los Angeles crowd when Diana Taurasi, a four-time Olympic gold medalist and SoCal native, became the WNBA’s leading career scorer when a layup brought her to 7,489 points — a remarkable feat surpassing two-time Olympic gold medalist Tina Thompson’s previous record of 7,488.


Getting Her Kicks

On the track, Allyson Felix, the Olympic sprinting champion and the first female track and field athlete to win nine Olympic medals, will remain among the most impressive track stars of her generation. And her shoe game? Also legendary.

Flower Girl

While we can’t exactly predict the weather when Olympic figure skating champion Tara Lipinski weds fiancé Todd Kapostasy, we can predict a heavy chance of flowers in the forecast.

Baby Bumps

One of the great baby rides we’ve taken through social with an athlete has been that of two-time Paralympian and Purple Heart recipient Melissa Stockwell. Stockwell has taken to the employ of the #momstrong hashtag as her baby bump has grown and the training has become just that much more difficult. Still, Stockwell is hitting the home stretch.

Side note: Stockwell did get out for a night last week, however …

Olympic silver medalist gymnast Chellsie Memmel made an announcement back in May that her family would be growing in November, and she offered an update.

Still fairly new to the ranks of Team USA mom-to-be is two-time fencing gold medalist Mariel Zagunis, who has made the excellent call to hit the road on a pre-baby vacation.

 

Zagunis is not alone in her baby-mooning, either …

Perhaps Team USA’s most famous mom-to-be, however, is Olympic tennis champion Serena Williams, who last week posted a video that earned more than 750,000 views. It’s merely a practice rally, but there’s also something so significantly empowering about one of history’s biggest hitters hammering away on her groundstrokes as a party of two.

Congratulations are in order for 2000 Olympian and one of this country's best-ever soccer players, Landon Donovan, whose “Preparations for the 2038 World Cup” paid off this past week in the form of Slate Bartell Donovan …


Father’s Day Appreciation

With Mother’s Day already in the social media books, Team USA came out strong when it came to social media support of Father’s Day, which brought out the heartfelt appreciation of fathers, husbands and sons. And a surprise piñata for the husband of "Magnificent Seven" Olympic gymnastics champion Shannon Miller (who doesn’t get cheated on her pretty good cut), plus a backyard luge run, some priceless flashbacks and much more …
