What are Team USA athletes — Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls — up to when they're not competing? They're training. They're practicing. They're traveling to competitions and meets and games and tournaments. They're relaxing. They're getting engaged and married and having children. They're taking hard-earned vacations. Or retiring. Or coping with the raw emotions that come from losing and winning. And they're sharing. Through the reach of social media, we're able to follow along on their often extraordinary journeys. We'll catch you up each week on what's "Red, White & Trending."

The Clock

Every. Single. Moment.

For many of us, the Olympics in PyeongChang are months and months away and something that will be viewed from the comforts of our homes next winter. For Olympic hopefuls, such as the three-time Olympic luger and first American woman to win a luge medal, Erin Hamlin, the distance between now and the Winter Games is measured in seconds.

It’s an Olympic year. Train like no one is watching, right Mikaela Shiffrin?

Team USA bobsledders Carlo Valdes and Austin Landis were working Saturday, too.

Precious Cargo

Sure, you want to take the most decorated athlete in the history of the Olympic Games, stick him in a cage and lower him in to … wait … what?

What could go wrong? Four-time Olympian and 23-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps now has a bit more time for bucket list items, so he turned up the degree of difficulty on his swimming by adding a most formidable opponent.

Phelps also celebrated a milestone this past week …

One year ago I married my best friend. So happy and thankful! What amazing dinner last night!! Love you!!!

Calling Her Shots

As the defending Olympic champion, Michelle Carter made a name for herself as one of the world’s best shot putters, and, as the 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 national champion, this country’s best. Her empowering nickname, The Shot Diva, and accompanying @shotdiva social handles have helped add to her stage presence. What many may not have known is her stage shyness. Carter is working to overcome the latter for the best of reason: to inspire.

Hoop Dreams

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Kobe Bryant may be retired from pro ball, but that didn’t stop Olympic water polo gold medalist and SoCal native Kaleigh Gilchrist from thinking about the hoops legend during the NBA Finals. Gilchrist appears to be more than willing to chuck up a three-ball …

Romanian Adventure

Two-time Olympian and self-professed “world traveler and connoisseur of a good time” Chris Mazdzer lived up to that this past week in Romania on a trip that included an old track, a friendly dog, the fattest building in the world (apparently) and atypical rush hour traffic.

Meanwhile, In Poland …

Olympic rower Meghan O’Leary was born in Tulsa, went to high school in Baton Rouge, to college at the University of Virginia — where she played softball and volleyball — and took at job at ESPN before giving rowing a try in 2010. Peripatetic would appear to be fine by O’Leary, and, within a span of a few days, went from a rodeo in New Jersey to rowing in a picturesque, if windy, Poland.

Poland, you're quite the romantic. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ

O’Leary also earned bigtime roommate karma points for this …

Arrow Short Of A Dozen

Who knows what might have been for two-time Olympic medalist archer Jake Kaminski with one more arrow. In any event, this is as impressive as it is beautiful in its arrangement.

Happy 60th

As birthday celebrations go, the big 6-0 has been pretty good to 1980 Miracle on Ice goaltender Jim Craig. There was a trip to Sonoma and a celebratory rope swing plunge … and … now … this:

Got to fly a fighter jet yesterday & wow was it a thrill! #stayyoung

Olympic champion gymnast Laurie Hernandez enjoyed a surprise party, too …

Fellow Final Fiver Madison Kocian also celebrated a birthday, No. 20, with some social media love from her teammates …

Happy 295th

Two-time Olympic women’s basketball champion Lindsay Whalen reached a milestone of her own this past week, becoming the winningest player in WNBA history with win No. 295 over her 13 seasons in the league. In surpassing fellow two-time Olympic gold medalist Swin Cash, the Minnesota native and University of Minnesota’s all-time leading scorer also set the recored while playing for the Minnesota Lynx.

Whalen’s keys to success (in addition to a willingness to take a selfie with Lynx fans during her historic night)?

Steeltown South

When we hears that the Steelers “travel well,” it’s generally a reference to how well their fans represent on the road. But in this case, it’s a nod to how well the team itself has hit the road. For the sixth season, Steelers players visited Mexico to host camps for both kids and adults. And look who they ran into this time around in Mexico City in advance of Team USA’s Sunday match, a 1-1 draw, against Mexico …

Team Work

The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team took “One Nation. One Team.” to new levels this past week. While in Scandinavia playing Sweden and Norway, Team USA burned the midnight oil to stay up for the men’s game in Mexico City.

Earlier in the day, in taking on Norway, Team USA’s women also looked sharp in the 1-0 win, courtesy a Christen Press goal and some special kits.

No Rest Day

Three-time Paralympic gold medalist swimmer Becca Meyers is fresh off a competition in Indianapolis, and is in full-on vacation mode. Well, that didn’t last long …

Wedding Warmup

Wedding bells are close to ringing for Olympic figure skating champion Tara Lipinski and fiancé Todd Kapostasy, still responsible for one of the great Team USA-related proposals, as the couple will tie the knot June 24. Buuuuttt, not before Kapostasy goes and wows his future wife, yet again, for her birthday.

Photo Op

When you see a shot that in one frame captures so much of what makes the Olympic and Paralympic movements special, you take it …

Name Game

Three-time Olympic alpine skier Steven Nyman, along with Charlotte Moats, is a proud new parent. Their daughter, after only a week, clearly has a gift of a great entertaining voice. With or without a name.

Winter Is Coming (Or Never Leaving)

Not only are base layers still hanging around, but there is still snow falling at Squaw …

Mammoth is still getting in some workouts, too, including for Olympic gold and two-time Olympic bronze medalist snowboarder Kelly Clark …

Flag Day Salutes

As patriotic sentiment goes, Team USA represents with the best of ‘em …

Cross Training

A new sport for Tucker West?

Well-Earned Vacation

Five-time Olympic gymnastics medalist Simone Biles has gone through a whirlwind of a year, which hasn't left a lot of downtime. So, when it comes along, she's going to make the most of it. In fact, she took a pre-vacation vacation.
