National Splurge Day is a day for people to treat themselves, whether that means a high calorie meal or a high cost car. So to celebrate the annual event on June 18, we asked eight Team USA athletes to tell us what they splurged on after their big Olympic win.
1. Erin Hamlin, Luge Bronze Medal
"One of my splurges was I went in on a puppy with my family. Since my life wasn’t — and still isn’t — conducive to getting my own dog, I had to convince my parents they wanted a new one. So Dooley has become more of a family dog that I was instrumental in getting.
But I think the thing I treated myself with the most was a ’76 Volkswagen Convertible Beetle. I didn’t get it until September of 2014 (friends of the family were selling it). I’ve wanted one my entire life, so it was a perfect splurge and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity."
2. Mariel Zagunis, Four Fencing Medals
"I'm not really one to splurge on big ticket items, but I did treat myself/splurge big time on sleep and M&M's after the Olympics were over."
3. Melissa Seidemann, Two Water Polo Gold Medals
"After the Olympics, I splurged on some really good meals and pampering myself!"
4. Caleb Paine, Sailing Bronze Medal
“Bought a new exhaust for my old 1998 BMW convertible. Because it sounds awesome!”
5. Jason Brown, Figure Skating Bronze Medal
“After winning a medal at the Olympics, the first thing I splurged on was McDonald's McFlurrys! Since they have free McDonalds in the Athlete Dining Hall at the Olympics, after I was finished competing, I literally had one McFlurry every day until I left Sochi!”
6. Kayla Harrison, Two Judo Gold Medals
“I actually bought a Chanel purse after the Olympics. I had bought a vintage one after London and used it every day, so I felt if it was something I wanted I knew I would put it to good use. It’s big enough to carry two gold medals!”
7. Rachel Fattal, Water Polo Gold Medal
“The first thing I splurged on when I got home was probably Italian food. I'm a huge foodie, and Italian is my favorite!”
8. Lindsay Whalen, Two Basketball Gold Medals
“The first thing I splurged on when I got home was a Blizzard from Dairy Queen. Butterfinger, of course.”
