Olympic soccer champion Sydney Leroux Dwyer and her husband, Sporting Kansas City star Dom Dwyer, on Sunday morning announced the birth of their first child, a son named Cassius Cruz Dwyer.
Leroux Dwyer, who was part of the U.S. women’s teams that won the London 2012 Olympic Games as well as the 2015 World Cup, announced the pregnancy in late January, less than two weeks after being traded to FC Kansas City of the National Women’s Soccer League.
On Friday evening, Dwyer scored his 58th career goal in Sporting Kansas City’s 3-3 draw against Houston, then celebrated by stuffing the ball under his jersey and kissing his wedding ring in recognition of his wife’s pregnancy.
If the young Cassius Dwyer fulfills his genetic athletic potential, he will have the option of playing soccer for three different national teams. His mother is Canadian and American, while his father hails from the United Kingdom.
