COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Outstanding performances during the month of June earned artistic gymnasts Simone Biles and Sam Mikulak, and the U.S. Women’s National Water Polo Team Best of June honors for the Team USA Awards presented by Dow, the United States Olympic Committee announced today.
Biles became the first woman since 1974 to win four consecutive senior women’s all-around titles at the 2016 P&G Women’s Gymnastics Championships in St. Louis. The three-time all-around world champion secured the title with a score of 125.000 – four points ahead of the runner-up finisher. In addition to the all-around crown, she added three gold medals on vault, balance beam and floor exercise. Her impressive performance earned her a spot to compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and USA Gymnastics Athlete of the Year honors. She now owns 11 senior national titles and has won every all-around competition she has entered since August 2013.
Mikulak earned a berth to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after posting the highest four-day all-around total (362.750) at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Men’s Gymnastics in St. Louis. Earlier in the month, he also claimed his fourth straight U.S. all-around title at the 2016 P&G Men’s Gymnastics Championships, becoming the first man since Blaine Wilson (2000) to win four consecutive U.S. all-around titles. He posted a two-day total of 181.500, more than a one-and-a-half-point margin of victory. He also won silver medals on the parallel bars (31.000) and pommel horse (30.550).
The U.S Women’s National Water Polo Team won the gold medal at the 2016 FINA Women’s World League Super Final in Shanghai. The U.S. outscored its opponents 81-41 in six matches, including a 13-9 win over Spain in the gold-medal game to claim its third consecutive FINA World League Super Final title and 10th overall.
Each National Governing Body may nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline. An internal nominating committee selects five nominees from both the male and female categories, and three from the team category to advance to the voting round. Votes received from NGB representatives and select members of the media account for 50 percent of the final tally, with the other half determined by online fan voting via TeamUSA.org/Awards.
In addition to Dow, the presenting sponsor, the Team USA Awards are supported by Coca-Cola, DICK’S Sporting Goods, Kellogg’s, Samsung and USG.
