Yijun Feng earned a spot on his first Olympic team by defeating teammate Sharon Alguetti in the final on Day 2 of the North American Olympic Qualification Tournament Saturday evening in Markham, Ontario.
Feng was able to put pressure on the 15-year-old Alguetti early, taking the first game 11-4, then fended off a challenge from the younger player in the second game, 11-7. The third game saw the score tied at 7-7 before Feng reeled off the next four points to go up 3-0, setting up a coup de grace for the struggling Alguetti in the fourth game with an 11-3 score.
Tightly in control of himself and the match, Feng displayed his first glimpse of emotion by flipping his racket into the air in celebration after the match point.
The 2015 men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles champion, Feng also won the U.S. youth singles crown and was part of the North American champion team last year.
Feng will be joined by Yue “Jennifer” Wu, who qualified to the Olympic Team by winning the gold medal at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, and Lily Zhang, who punched her ticket to Rio Friday night with her win in Markham.
One more men’s position is available as the tournament comes to a close Sunday, as well as one team-only woman’s spot.
