USA Cycling announced Friday that it has named Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa./Custom Velo) to the U.S. Olympic Track Cycling Team for the men’s omnium.
The USAC Athlete Selection Committee filled the final Olympic Track Team spot following Lea’s successful arbitration to be added to the Olympic Long Team. Lea was serving a 16-month suspension for an anti-doping rule violation that was reduced to six months following a hearing with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Following the CAS award, Lea filed for arbitration under Section 9 of the United States Olympic Committee’s bylaws, arguing that USA Cycling should name him to the Long Team despite the fact that he was serving an anti-doping rule violation suspension at the time of the Long Team nomination. The arbitrator determined that USA Cycling was required to add Lea to its Olympic Long Team.
USA Cycling will receive the arbitrator’s full decision later this month.
On Dec. 15, 2015, the USAC Selection Committee named Jake Duehring (Irvine, Calif./GS Ciao) to the Olympic Long Team for the omnium. The Selection Committee convened on Friday following Lea’s successful arbitration, and applying its Olympic Games Men’s Track Selection Criteria, selected Lea to the single Olympic spot for the men’s omnium event.
