The first step to the world cup short track season begins this weekend at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee with the US Speedskating world cup qualifier for short track skaters.

Leading the short trackers into the new season are three-time Olympic medalist J.R. Celski and 2014 Olympic silver medalist Chris Creveling on the men’s side and 2014 Olympian Jessica Smith on the women’s side.

"I'm looking forward to using this weekend's world cup trials as a prep for the upcoming world cup races," said Smith, who got married three weeks ago. "I'm excited for the season and improving each time I step on the ice."

Others expected to race in the qualifying races Saturday and Sunday are National Training Program members Lexi Burkholder, Adam Callister, Keith Carroll Jr., Kimi Goetz, Casey Mullarkey, Ryan Pivirotto, Katy Ralston, Kristen Santos, Aaron Tran, Jae Jae Yoo and Soo An Yoo.

The opening ISU World Cup event for short track is Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 in Montreal.

The world cup qualifier for long trackers will be held Oct. 16-18 at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah.
