When the Opening Ceremony is held Aug. 5, 2016, Rio de Janeiro will become the first South American city to host an Olympic Games. More than 10,500 athletes from 204 nations are expected to participate in 28 sports and 41 disciplines, including the highly anticipated reinstatement of golf and rugby, while more than 4,350 athletes from 160 nations are expected to compete in 22 sports when the 2016 Paralympic Games are held Sept. 7-18, featuring the debut of para-canoe and paratriathlon.
