Clarissa Chun, a bronze medalist at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Olympic teammate Elena Pirozhkova, a four-time world medalist, are among the U.S. women’s freestyle wrestlers who’ll compete Saturday in the Dave Schultz Memorial Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The three-day tournament began Thursday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center with competition in Greco-Roman, and features elite wrestlers in three disciplines from 18 nations. Among the Greco-Roman wrestlers were two-time Olympian Spenser Mango and his younger brother, Ryan, a 2016 Olympic hopeful.
Joining Chun (48 kg.) and Pirozhkova (63 kg.) in women’s freestyle are two-time world bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (48 kg.), 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller (69 kg.) and two-time junior world champion Victoria Anthony (48 kg.).
Tyler Caldwell, a 2014 university world champion, and 2009 junior world champion Dom Bradley headline a group of Americans in Friday’s men’s freestyle. Caldwell will wrestle in the 74 kg. weight class and Bradley is at 120 kg.
The men’s freestyle field also includes 2012 cadet world champion Zain Retherford of the United States at 65 kg., and 2008 Olympic bronze medalists Radoslav Velikov and Yavor Yanakiev of Bulgaria.
The tournament, now in its 17th year, is named after the late Dave Schultz, an Olympic and world champion who was murdered in 1996.
