Jordan Burroughs enters the U.S. Olympic Trials for wrestling as the No. 1 seed at 74 kilograms in freestyle, and should he qualify for the Games in London this summer, he will be considered a contender for the podium, if not the gold medal.
Burroughs won two NCAA championships at Nebraska, finishing with unbeaten records in his junior and senior seasons. He was a four-time All-American. He immediately jumped into freestyle competition on the international level and won FILA World, Pan American Games, U.S. Open and U.S. World Team titles. In eight international tournaments, he hasn’t lost a match.
Bet you didn’t know this: Burroughs showed off his World Wrestling Championships gold medal in front of more than 85,000 at Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium in October 2011, when he was honored during halftime of Nebraska’s football game against Ohio State. “It was pretty awesome,” Burroughs said.
Claim to fame: In 2011 Burroughs became just the second wrestler in U.S. history to win a world championship, NCAA championship and the NCAA Dan Hodge Trophy (nation’s best collegiate wrestler) in the same year. Stephen Neal, a former guard with the NFL’s New England Patriots, was the first to accomplish the feat, in 1999.
