Karolyi to make special announcement about an event coming to Chicago that supports Chicago 2016's efforts to bring the Games to Chicago
WHO: Bela Karolyi and representatives from Chicago 2016, USA Gymnastics and World Sport Chicago, as well as local area gymnasts.
WHAT: Legendary Olympic Gymnastics Coach Bela Karolyi will visit Chicago on Thursday to make an announcement about an international gymnastics event that will be held in the metropolitan area to support the city's bid to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016. Following the press conference, Karolyi will interact with Chicago youth gymnasts at the Broadway Armory.
One of the most well-known gymnastics coaches, Karolyi has coached 28 Olympians and nine Olympic champions, including Mary Lou Retton, Nadia Comaneci and Kerri Strug. Although he has retired from competitive coaching, he is currently the director of the U.S. Women's National Training Center, located just outside of Houston in Huntsville, Texas, and an ambassador for the sport. Recently, Karolyi was a gymnastics analyst for NBC Sports at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
