Hugh McCutcheon's Olympic experience started tragically when his father-in-law was stabbed to death in a random attack at a Beijing tourist site just hours after the opening ceremony. He'll end these games coaching the U.S. men's volleyball's team in the gold-medal match against Brazil. NBC will feature portions of the games in Sunday night's final Olympic broadcast.
A LONG DECADE: The U.S. men's water polo team plays for its first gold medal since 1988 in a final match against Hungary. The team came to Beijing ranked ninth in the world, and few gave them much of a chance of bringing home a medal. But they upset world No. 1 Croatia en route to the finals.
GOODBYE BEIJING: NBC's Bob Costas will anchor the closing ceremony, which will be shown on tape delay at 7 p.m. EDT on NBC. The same director who ran the opening ceremony will stage it, but won't use any of the original performers.
HELLO LONDON: The Olympics are officially handed off to London, site of the 2012 games, in an eight-minute segment in which Michael Phelps and David Beckham will appear via satellite.
