HEATS IN THE SUN
The first blue skies of the games greeted the start of track and field events. American Tyson Gay advanced to the 100-meter semifinals in 10.09 seconds in his first race since a hamstring injury six weeks ago. Jamaican world record-holder Usain Bolt ran a 9.92 and teammate Asafa Powell also advanced in 10.02.
DOPING
North Korean shooter Kim Jong Su tested positive for propanolol and was stripped of his silver medal in the 50-meter pistol and his bronze in the 10-meter air pistol. His bronze was given to American Jason Turner. Vietnamese gymnast Thi Ngan Thuong Do, who finished last in women's gymnastics floor exercise, tested positive for the diuretic furosemide.
MEDALS
Through 103 events, China has 26 gold medals and 41 overall. The United States has 14 golds, but leads all countries with 46 total medals. After the first week of competition, Canada has no medals at all.
GRECO-MOANIN' WRESTLER
The IOC opened a disciplinary investigation into Swedish Greco-Roman wrestler Ara Abrahamian, who had to be restrained from going after matside officials when he lost in the semifinals of the 84-kg event. During the medal ceremony, Abrahamian took his bronze from around his neck and dropped it on the mat in disgust.
