Torchbearer Statements Following 2008 Olympic Torch Relay in San Francisco

April 09, 2008, 1 a.m. (ET)

Natalie Coughlin, five-time Olympic swimming medalist in 2004, 2008 Olympic Swimming Hopeful "As the last person to run the Torch, along with Willie Brown and Herschel Walker, it was incredible. To see all of the people lining the street, the supporters as well as the protesters, it was really touching. The support of the San Francisco Police Department and all the other officials was more than I expected, so I'm very grateful they were all there and worked together so well. It was an incredible experience that I'll never forget."Cindy Stinger, Olympian - Team Handball, 1984, 1988, 1992 "It was an absolutely fantastic opportunity. The whole experience was above and beyond any expectations. Although we had some last-minute changes, they were to ensure everyone's safety, and all involved were happy to go with the flow. I am truly grateful for all of the work the City of San Francisco put into this event. And, I appreciate both Peter [Ueberroth] and Mayor Newsom for communicating directly with us throughout the day."Kortney Clemons, Paralympic Hopeful, Iraq war veteran "It was really exciting to be a part of the Relay today. It means a lot to me because that flame is heading to Beijing, and I hope to be heading there myself in September. I'm glad all of the Torchbearers were able to be a part of this today, and I'm glad the Olympic spirit will move on."For more information, please contact the USOC Communications Division at (719) 866-4529.
