TEHRAN, Iran – The United States dropped three dual meets in Group A competition on the first day of the Greco-Roman World Cup on Thursday.
The USA opened with a close loss to Turkey, 3-5, then fell to Hungary, 0-8, and lost to Russia, 1-7.
The United States still has one more Group A match on Friday morning, when the team faces Kazakhstan. Later on Friday, the USA will have a medal-round match, which will be determined based upon its final standing within Group B.
In the first dual meet, the USA was tied at 3-3 with Turkey after the first six bouts.
At 66 kg/145.5 lbs., U.S. Open champion RaVaughn Perkins (Omaha, Neb./ReadyRP National) scored a fall over Basar Enes. Two-time World Team member Andrew Bisek (Chaska, Minn./Minnesota Storm) added a 6-0 win over Furkhan Bayrak at 75 kg/ 165 lbs. Winning bout three for the USA was Jordan Holm (Minneapolis, Minn /Minnesota Storm) at 85 kg/187 lbs. with a disqualification over Methan Basar.
Turkey scored a victory at 98 kg to lead 4-3 going into the heavyweight match. In spite of coming on strong later in the match, 2013 World Team member Robby Smith dropped a close 5-6 match to Atilla Guzel, giving Turkey the 5-3 victory.
If Robby Smith wins against Atilla Guzel, the USA wins the dual because of the pin by RaVaughan Perkins. Robby had Atilla gassed but could’t finish him off. Our guys wrestled hard and wrestled fearlessly. It was a great dual meet. Obviously we are disappointed with the loss but we saw some very nice things from our veterans and some good stuff from our youngsters," said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser after the dual meet.
"RaVaughn had a great win pinning the Turk and getting us going in the right direction. This kid is going to be a killer if he continues to gain experience and improve his positioning skills. Bisek and Holm both wrestled with great intensity, frustrating their opponents and forcing them to make mistakes," continued Fraser.
In the second round, Hungary swept the USA, winning all eight bouts. Two of the losses were only by one point, as Laszlo Szabo edged Andrew Bisek, 4-3 at 75 kg and Balint Lam stopped Robby Smith, 5-4 at heavyweight.
"Whether veteran or youngster, the USA Greco-Roman team needs to go back to their training sites and stop doing business as usual! We need to get ourselves in training situations that exhaust our bodies to the max. Day in and day out, we need to push our bodies in such a way that when we leave the wrestling room, and step in the shower, our bodies will sting when the water hits our skin. We need to search out the toughest training partners that we can find and battle with them like there is no tomorrow. If you have a problem with getting turned then do something about it! Take your career in your own hands and find the guys that will get on top of you and will crush you until your ribs and torso become so sore you can scream," said Fraser after the dual.
"There is no big secret. If we’re not working our bodies to death each and every day then please don't be frustrated when we get shut out by the Hungarian team at a World Cup, or anywhere else for that matter! I hope our U.S. team will remember the pain of our experiences and I hope it will motivate us to do what we need to do in the practice room each and every day," Fraser continued.
After a bye in round three, the USA drew 2013 World champion Russia in the dual meet, falling by a 1-7 margin. Winning the only U.S. match was Robby Smith, who came from behind to defeat Vitalii Ilnitskii, 5-3.
Russia picked up five technical falls and a pin during the dual meet. The closest loss by an American wrestler came at 75 kg, where Andy Bisek fell to Evgeny Saleev, 0-3.
"Robby Smith made a big step forward tonight coming back from a 3-0 deficit against the Russian, breaking him and beating him 5-3. He showed confidence in his outstanding cardiovascular conditioning, staying to the task of not, only out fighting him, but leading the attack and pace. The Iranian crowd, who were chanting for him, seemed to inspire Robby a great deal," said Fraser
"Our butt whooping experience here today will do nothing but motivate this team to go back home and 'get better'! The younger guys all showed nice fighting skills on their feet, even though many are on their first-ever major international competition. What a rude awakening to come to the Mecca of wrestling in Iran, to begin their journey. Rude yes, but still a great awakening nevertheless," continued Fraser.
Russia has clinched the Group A title with a 4-0 record. Hungary stands at 2-1, both Turkey and Kazakhstan are 1-2, and the United States is 3-0 after the first day. Group A competition completes on Friday morning.
In Group B, host Iran has a 3-0 record after day one. Azerbaijan is 2-1, Finland and Armenia are 1-2 and Korea is 1-3. Group B competition also finishes Friday morning.
The USA is competing in the Greco-Roman World Cup for the first time since 2008.
